The Russell Farmstead in the Town of Erin earned the distinction as a Sesquicentennial Farm this summer at the 2010 Wisconsin State Fair. The lineage began with Edmund Russell’s settlement in 1843 through 1849. Edmund’s son, Michael Russell, continued ownership from 1849 through 1891. Michael’s son Joseph Russell brought the farm through the turn of the century (1891 through 1940). Then Joseph’s wife, Ellen “Nellie” Russell, owned the farm from 1940 through 1950, their son, Erwin Russell, owned the property from 1950 through 1968. Erwin’s wife, Hildegarde Russell, continued ownership from 1968 through 1971 when she was joined in ownership with their son, Patrick Russell, through 1991. In 1991 Ruth Russell Spielmann and her husband assumed possession of the farm’s homestead. Other family members/landowners include Jean Russell Schlitt and her husband Ron Schlitt, Julie Spielmann, Brian Schlitt and family, Jeremy Schlitt and family and Mary Russell Sundeen.
